Payment Methods for E-Commerce in Ghana: What Works in 2026

Asiamah Emmanuel Donkor•9/6/2026

The complete guide to accepting payments for your online store in Ghana — mobile money, card, pay on delivery, and which gateway to use. Real numbers, real comparisons.

The payment step is where most Ghanaian e-commerce sales die. A buyer finds your product. They want it. They go to checkout. And then the payment process either does not support how they want to pay, feels untrustworthy, or simply does not work.

That abandoned checkout is a permanently lost sale. They will not come back. Getting payment right is not a technical detail — it is a revenue decision.

This guide covers every payment option available for e-commerce in Ghana, the fees involved, and how to set up the combination that converts the most buyers.

Why Payment Is Where Most Ghanaian E-Commerce Fails

Online shopping behaviour in Ghana is shaped by one dominant reality: most buyers use mobile money, not bank cards, for everyday purchases. MTN MoMo has over 20 million registered users in Ghana. A large proportion of these users do not own a bank-linked Visa or Mastercard.

When an online store in Ghana only offers card payment at checkout, it is effectively telling the majority of its potential buyers that they cannot purchase. This is the most common and most costly mistake in Ghanaian e-commerce.

The second issue is trust. Online payment fraud exists in Ghana and buyers know it. A checkout page that looks unprofessional, requires sensitive details without visible security indicators, or redirects to an unfamiliar page loses buyers who were ready to pay but not ready to take that risk.

Solving both problems — offering the right payment methods and making the payment experience feel safe — is what separates online stores that convert from ones that do not.

The Main Payment Methods in Ghana

Offer Mobile Money + Card + Pay on Delivery as your baseline combination. This covers the payment preference of the vast majority of Ghanaian buyers.

Mobile Money — The Most Important Option

Mobile money is not an optional add-on for Ghanaian e-commerce. It is the primary payment infrastructure of the country and the most common method for online purchases.

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo)

MTN MoMo is the dominant mobile money network in Ghana with the largest user base. Any buyer on the MTN network — which is the majority of mobile users in Ghana — can pay directly from their MoMo wallet without needing a bank account or card.

For your store: MoMo payments are processed through a payment gateway (Paystack or Hubtel). When a buyer chooses MoMo at checkout, they enter their MTN number, receive a prompt on their phone to approve the payment, and the transaction is confirmed in seconds. The money arrives in your gateway account, from where you withdraw to your bank or MoMo wallet. MTN MoMo is non-negotiable for any Ghanaian e-commerce store.

Vodafone Cash & AirtelTigo Money

Vodafone Cash is the second-largest mobile money network in Ghana. If you are using Paystack or Hubtel, Vodafone Cash support is included in the integration — no additional setup required.

AirtelTigo Money has a smaller user base than MTN and Vodafone but is worth supporting since it adds no additional complexity when using a gateway that already handles it.

Card Payments

Visa and Mastercard payments are important for higher-value transactions (buyers more comfortable using a card for GH₵500+ purchases), buyers who use a salary account with a debit card, and international buyers purchasing from Ghana.

Card payments are accepted through Paystack or Hubtel alongside MoMo — no separate integration needed. The same gateway handles both. Important for card payments: Your checkout page must be served over HTTPS (the padlock symbol in the browser). Avoid redirecting buyers to a completely different-looking page to complete card payment — it erodes trust. Paystack's inline checkout keeps the buyer on your page.

Pay on Delivery

Pay on Delivery (POD) is the highest-converting option for acquiring new customers in Ghana. The buyer pays when the order arrives — no upfront online payment required. For first-time buyers who do not yet know your brand, POD removes the biggest barrier: the fear of paying and receiving nothing.

The downside of Pay on Delivery is Return to Origin (RTO) — orders that are dispatched but not collected by the buyer. In the Ghanaian market, RTO rates on POD orders can be 15–30% for businesses without a confirmation process.

How to manage POD effectively: Call to confirm every POD order before dispatching. A 60-second phone call asking "Hello, I'm calling to confirm your order of [product] — is this correct and are you still expecting delivery?" eliminates most non-genuine orders.

Payment Gateways: Paystack vs Hubtel vs Others

A payment gateway is the service that processes the payment between your buyer and your bank account. In Ghana, the main options are Paystack and Hubtel.

Paystack

Paystack is the most widely used payment gateway for Ghanaian e-commerce and the one we recommend for most online stores. The Shopify integration is the cleanest of any Ghanaian gateway. The dashboard is clear and well-designed. Payouts to your Ghanaian bank account are processed reliably.

Hubtel

Hubtel is a Ghanaian technology company offering payment processing alongside a broader set of business tools including point-of-sale, ordering systems, and delivery. If you have a physical location as well as online sales, Hubtel's POS integration keeps your payment system unified.

Which Payment Methods Should Your Store Offer?

Based on running e-commerce brands in Ghana and building payment systems for client stores, here is the combination that converts the most buyers:

  • MTN Mobile Money (via Paystack) — required
  • Visa / Mastercard (via Paystack) — included in the same integration
  • Pay on Delivery — manual process, call to confirm every order

Frequently Asked Questions

Which payment gateway is best for a new online store in Ghana?

Paystack is the best starting point for most new Ghanaian online stores. It is easy to set up, integrates directly with Shopify and WooCommerce, supports all major Ghanaian mobile money networks and cards, and has no monthly fee — you only pay per transaction.

Do I need to be a registered business to use Paystack in Ghana?

Paystack allows unverified accounts to start processing payments, but with lower transaction limits. To unlock higher limits and access all features, business verification is required — this involves submitting your business registration certificate from the Registrar of Companies.
