Common Mistakes Ghanaian Businesses Make

Frequently Asked Questions

Facebook has over 6 million active users in Ghana. That is a significant portion of the country's adult population spending time on a platform where you can reach them with a specific message, about a specific product, at a specific moment. Most businesses in Ghana are using it wrong.

They boost posts and call it advertising. They run Traffic campaigns and wonder why nobody is buying. They spend GH₵200 and conclude Facebook ads do not work.

Facebook ads work. The system is not as simple as hitting the boost button. This guide shows you how to do it correctly.

Can Facebook Ads Work for Businesses in Ghana?

Yes — and the evidence is everywhere. Ghanaian businesses across fashion, electronics, food, beauty, events, and professional services are generating consistent monthly revenue from Meta advertising. The infrastructure for it to work is in place:

Factor Status in Ghana Facebook penetration 6M+ active users Mobile money Enables online payment after ad click WhatsApp Primary sales closing channel Instagram High product discovery engagement Cost per click GH₵0.80–2.50 — competitive globally

The question is not whether Facebook ads work in Ghana. It is whether you are running them correctly.

What You Need Before You Start

Before running a single ad, three things must be in place:

  1. A Facebook Business Page. Your ads run from a page — not your personal profile. Create one at facebook.com/pages/create if you do not have one. Add a clear profile photo, cover image, and bio.

A Meta Business Manager account. This is the dashboard where all ad accounts, pages, pixels, and billing are managed. com and create one.

It takes five minutes and is separate from your personal Facebook account.

A product or offer people actually want. Ads amplify what already exists. If the offer is unclear, the price is wrong, or the product does not solve a real problem, ads will not fix any of that.

Validate your offer with organic posts or WhatsApp before spending on ads.

Step 1 — Set Up Meta Business Manager

Business Manager is the correct infrastructure for running ads professionally. Do not run ads from a personal account or directly from a Facebook page — both have severe limitations and compliance risks. How to set it up:

  • Go to business.facebook.com
  • Click "Create Account"
  • Enter your business name, your name, and your business email
  • Add your Facebook Business Page to the account
  • Create an Ad Account within Business Manager
  • Add a payment method (Visa, Mastercard, or PayPal — Business Manager does not accept mobile money directly, but you can use a card linked to your business account)

Once Business Manager is set up, every other piece of infrastructure lives inside it.

Step 2 — Install the Meta Pixel

The Meta Pixel is the single most important technical element of Facebook advertising — and the most commonly skipped step by Ghanaian businesses. What it does: The Pixel is a piece of code on your website that reports back to Facebook on what people do after clicking your ad. Without it, Facebook knows who clicked your ad but not who actually bought.

With it correctly configured, Facebook learns what your buyers look like and finds more of them automatically over time. Why it matters for cost: A Pixel tracking purchases allows you to run a Conversions campaign. A Conversions campaign finds people likely to buy — not just likely to click.

This typically produces 2–3× the customers from the same budget compared to a Traffic campaign without Pixel data.

  • In Business Manager, go to Events Manager → Connect a data source → Web → Facebook Pixel
  • Name your Pixel and enter your website URL
  • Install the code on your website: Shopify: Use the official Shopify-Facebook integration — no code needed
  • WordPress: Use the PixelYourSite plugin
  • Custom site: Copy and paste the Pixel code into your website's <head> tag
  • Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension and visit your website to confirm the Pixel is firing
  • Configure events: PageView fires automatically. Purchase, Lead, and AddToCart events need to be configured to fire on the relevant pages

Install the Pixel before spending anything. It is foundational.

Step 3 — Choose the Right Campaign Objective

This is where most Ghanaian businesses go wrong — and it is costing them significantly.

The most common and most expensive mistake: Running a Traffic objective campaign when you want customers. Traffic optimises for clicks. Facebook finds people who click on things — not people who buy things.

Your cost per click is low, your click numbers look impressive, and your sales are disappointing. The clicks are real. The buyers are not in them.

What to use instead:

  • If you want purchases: Sales → Conversions → Purchase event
  • If you want WhatsApp enquiries: Engagement → Messages or Leads
  • If you want lead form submissions: Leads

Match the objective to the actual action you want the customer to take.

Step 4 — Build Your Audience

Audience targeting determines who sees your ad. There are three types, each appropriate for different situations:

  • Interest-based audiences (start here): You define the audience by selecting interests, demographics, and behaviours. For a women's fashion brand targeting buyers in Accra:
    • Location: Ghana → Accra (or specifically Accra, Kumasi, Tema)
    • Age: 22–40
    • Gender: Women
    • Interests: Fashion, Online shopping, specific fashion brands

Lookalike audiences (use after 30+ days of Pixel data): Facebook analyses your existing customers and finds people who are statistically similar. Upload a list of your existing customers' phone numbers, or use Pixel data from purchasers, to create a Lookalike. This typically outperforms interest targeting once you have 100+ purchases tracked.

Custom audiences / retargeting (always run this): Show ads specifically to people who already interacted with your business — visited your website, added to cart, watched your video, messaged your page. These people already know you. Retargeting is almost always your highest-ROAS campaign because you are reaching people who showed buying intent.

Audience setup for a new campaign: Start with 2–3 interest-based ad sets targeting slightly different audience profiles. After 14 days, identify which is producing the best cost per result and shift budget toward it.

Step 5 — Create the Ad

Your ad has three elements: the visual, the primary text (copy above the image), and the headline (bold text below the image). Each has a specific job.

The visual — stops the scroll: You have 2–3 seconds to capture attention. The visuals that work best in Ghana:

  • Product in lifestyle context (not on a white background)
  • A person speaking directly to camera about a problem or result

Bold text graphic with a statement or question the target audience recognises Avoid: blurry images, heavily designed corporate graphics, stock photos that look foreign, images with excessive text overlay (Meta limits text on images).

The primary text — earns the read: The first line determines whether anyone reads the rest. Strong opening approaches:

  • Name the exact problem: "Are you spending on Facebook ads and getting no sales?"
  • State a specific result: "This is how one Accra fashion brand grew orders by 300%"

Ask a question with an obvious yes: "Do you want more customers for your business in Ghana?" Write conversationally — the way you would explain something to a customer in person. Not like a formal advertisement. Not in corporate language.

The headline — drives the click: Appears in bold below the image. Should state the primary benefit or the offer directly:

  • "Get your first order in 14 days"
  • "Free delivery anywhere in Ghana"
  • "Book your free strategy call"

Testing: Always launch with at least 2–3 creative variants. Different images, different opening lines, or different headlines. After 7 days, you know which performs best.

Scale the winner, build a new challenger to test against it.

Step 6 — Set Your Budget

Why minimum budget matters: Facebook's algorithm needs to record approximately 50 conversion events per week to exit the learning phase and optimise efficiently. At GH₵50/day, a campaign targeting purchases at GH₵40–50 each produces roughly 7–10 purchases per week. Learning phase takes longer at this budget but eventually optimises.

At GH₵20/day, the algorithm rarely gets enough data to exit learning phase. The campaign stays inefficient indefinitely.

Budget type: Use daily budget for new campaigns. Daily budget gives you predictable daily spend and easy control. Lifetime budget (total budget over a defined period) is appropriate once a campaign is proven and you want to set and forget for a specific promotion window.

Scaling rule: When a campaign is performing at your target ROAS, increase the daily budget by no more than 20% every 3–5 days. Doubling the budget overnight typically triggers a new learning phase and disrupts performance.

Step 7 — Launch and Read the Data

The first 72 hours: Do not make changes. The algorithm is in the early learning phase — collecting data on who responds to your ad. Early intervention resets the learning phase and wastes the data already accumulated.

After 14 days: Make your first significant decisions — which ad sets to scale, which to pause, which creative to keep running, and what new creative to test.

Common Mistakes Ghanaian Businesses Make

  • Boosting posts: Limited targeting, wrong objectives, no data. Use Ads Manager.
  • Traffic objective: Finds clickers, not buyers. Use Conversions or Messages.
  • No Pixel installed: Algorithm cannot learn who buyers are. Install Pixel before spending.
  • No landing page: Ad traffic goes to homepage or Instagram bio. Build a dedicated landing page.
  • Changing campaign too early: Resets learning phase. Wait 7 days minimum before changing.
  • Budget too low: Never exits learning phase. Minimum GH₵50/day.
  • One creative only: No data on what works. Test 2–3 variants from launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on Facebook ads in Ghana? Start with GH₵50–100 per day. This gives the algorithm enough data to begin optimising within the first two weeks.

Lower budgets take significantly longer to produce reliable data. Your monthly ad spend should be calibrated against your target cost per customer and your product margin.

How long before Facebook ads produce results in Ghana? Allow 7–14 days for the learning phase. Most campaigns start producing meaningful, optimisable data within 14 days.

Consistent, profitable results typically emerge within 30–45 days as the Pixel accumulates buyer data.

Do I need a website to run Facebook ads in Ghana? You need a landing page — a dedicated page built for the specific campaign. This is not the same as your homepage.

io, or as part of your Shopify store. Click-to-WhatsApp campaigns are an alternative for businesses without a website — the ad opens a WhatsApp conversation instead of a landing page.

What is the difference between boosting a post and running an ad in Ads Manager? Boosting a post is a simplified version of Facebook advertising with limited targeting options, limited objectives, and limited data. Running an ad through Ads Manager gives you full control over objective, audience, placement, budget, and creative — and full access to performance data.

Always use Ads Manager.

Why are my Facebook ads getting clicks but no sales? The most common causes: wrong campaign objective (Traffic instead of Conversions), the landing page is not converting, the offer is unclear or not compelling, the Pixel is not tracking purchases so the algorithm cannot optimise for buyers, or the audience is too broad. Diagnose from the conversion funnel backward — check the landing page conversion rate before adjusting the ad.

Can I run Facebook ads without a Pixel? Technically yes. But without a Pixel, you cannot run Conversions campaigns, you cannot retarget website visitors, you cannot create Lookalike audiences from buyers, and the algorithm cannot learn who your buyers are.

Running significant ad spend without a Pixel is running blind.
