Frequently Asked Questions

Hiring a marketing agency in Ghana is one of the most consequential decisions a growing business makes. Done right, it accelerates your growth with systems and expertise you could not build internally. Done wrong, it costs you months of retainer fees, a budget worth of wasted ad spend, and the opportunity cost of time you could have spent elsewhere.

The problem is that most business owners in Ghana evaluate agencies the wrong way. They look at the website, they like the portfolio aesthetic, they get impressed in the pitch meeting, and they sign. Three months later they are looking at reports full of reach and impressions and wondering why their sales did not move.

Why Most Businesses Choose the Wrong Agency in Ghana

The marketing agency landscape in Ghana has expanded significantly in recent years. Social media has made it easy for anyone to build a portfolio page, post client logos, and present as a professional agency. The gap between what an agency shows in its pitch and what it delivers in execution can be enormous.

Three patterns consistently lead to the wrong choice: Evaluating the agency by how it presents, not what it has produced. A well-designed website and a confident founder are not evidence of marketing competence. They are evidence of presentation skill.

Ask for evidence of outcomes. Not defining what success looks like before signing. If you and the agency do not agree on specific, measurable targets before work begins, you have no basis for evaluating performance — and the agency has no clear mandate to optimise toward.

Assuming a low price is a good deal. Very cheap agency services in Ghana are almost always cheap for a reason: your account is managed by a junior team member, your work is one of thirty accounts they manage simultaneously, and the time invested in your business is minimal. The five questions below cut through all of this.

Can You Show Me Specific Results From a Similar Business?

Why this question matters: Not general results. Not testimonials. " Specific numbers from a Ghanaian business, in a similar industry, at a similar stage.

The challenge with marketing in Ghana is that it is contextually different from marketing in the UK, the US, or even Nigeria. Cost per click, audience behaviour, payment methods, trust signals, and the content that converts are all specific to this market. An agency that has primarily worked with international clients, or that applies foreign frameworks without adaptation, will underperform.

What a good answer looks like: "We managed Meta campaigns for a fashion brand in Accra for six months. Their cost per purchase started at GH₵85 and came down to GH₵42 by month three. 2× on a consistent basis.

" Numbers. A specific client type. A specific timeframe.

Accessible evidence. " Vague. No numbers.

No specifics. Move on.

What Exactly Does Your Retainer Include?

Why this question matters: "Social media management" in Ghana means something different from every agency you ask. It might mean three posts per week with basic graphics, or it might mean daily content, community management, paid advertising, and a monthly strategy session. The price can be the same for both.

What you get is not. Get a written scope of work before signing — a specific list of what is produced each month, how many revisions are included, what reporting you receive and how often, and what metrics are tracked. 2 Facebook ad campaigns managed with daily monitoring.

Monthly performance report covering cost per result, ROAS, and revenue attribution. One strategy call per month. " / "We customise based on your needs" (without specifying what those needs translate to in deliverables).

If an agency is uncomfortable being specific about deliverables, the deliverables would not justify the price if stated clearly.

Who Will Actually Work on My Account?

Why this question matters: Many agencies in Ghana — as in every market — use a two-tier model: experienced founders or senior staff pitch the account and build the relationship, and junior staff execute the work. The person who impressed you in the meeting is not the person writing your ads. This is not necessarily wrong — it is how agencies scale — but you deserve to know who is actually managing your campaigns and what their experience level is.

What to ask specifically: Who will be my primary contact for day-to-day communication? Who will build and manage my ad campaigns? How many accounts are they managing simultaneously?

What is their experience level with Meta Ads specifically? What a good answer looks like: "Your account manager is [Name]. They have managed Meta campaigns for [X years] and currently manage [reasonable number — 8–12 accounts] simultaneously.

/ "Our junior team does the day-to-day but our senior staff oversees everything" without specifics on what oversight actually means.

How Do You Measure and Report Success?

Why this question matters: The metrics an agency leads with in its reports tell you exactly what it is optimising for — and what it is not. An agency that leads with reach, impressions, follower count, and engagement rate is telling you that these are the outcomes it considers important. Revenue and customer acquisition are the outcomes that matter to your business.

An agency that is not measuring and reporting on these is not aligned with your actual goal. What to ask specifically: What metrics do you track and report on? How do you connect marketing activity to revenue?

What does your monthly report look like? Can I see an example? What do you do when results are below target?

What a good answer looks like: "Our reports lead with revenue-focused metrics — cost per purchase or cost per lead, ROAS, and total tracked revenue from the campaigns. We also include creative performance, audience insights, and our plan for the next month. " These are activity metrics.

Ask what they produced in terms of leads or revenue.

What Accountability Do You Offer If Results Don't Come?

Why this question matters: The standard agency model in Ghana — and globally — involves no accountability. You pay the retainer, they do the work, and if results do not materialise, you receive an explanation and an invoice for the next month. This misaligns incentives fundamentally.

The agency gets paid regardless of performance. You bear all the downside risk. Some agencies — fewer, but they exist — offer some form of accountability.

A money-back guarantee if specific targets are not met within a defined period. A continuation clause where they work at no charge until agreed targets are achieved. A performance-based component where part of their fee is tied to results.

) An agency that offers no accountability is demonstrating low confidence in their own outcomes. It is telling you something.

Red Flags to Watch For

Beyond the five questions, watch for these signals during the evaluation process: 🚩 Their own marketing is poor. 🚩 They send a proposal within 24 hours without asking enough questions. A real proposal requires understanding your business, your customers, your margins, and your goals.

🚩 They focus on social media posting without mentioning ads, funnels, or conversion. 🚩 They cannot explain what campaign objective to use for your goal. A basic knowledge test.

🚩 No case studies with specific numbers. Testimonials without data are marketing. Data is evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I pay for a marketing agency in Ghana? Quality marketing agency retainers in Ghana range from GH₵1,500 to GH₵7,000+ per month depending on scope. This is separate from your ad spend budget.

Very cheap management (under GH₵1,000/month) almost always means minimal time invested in your account. How long should I give an agency before judging results? Paid advertising campaigns need at least 30–60 days to produce reliable data.

Content and SEO require 3–6 months. Establish agreed milestones at the start — what should be achieved by day 30, day 60, and day 90 — so both parties have clarity. Should I hire a specialist or a full-service agency?

If your primary need is customer acquisition through paid advertising, a specialist performance agency is typically more effective. If you need a full marketing system — content, ads, funnels, website — a full-service agency that can build the complete connected system is better. Can I trust an agency that is cheaper than others?
