The honest diagnosis of why Facebook and Instagram ads fail for most Ghanaian businesses — and the specific fixes that actually change results.

Why Your Ads Are Not Working in Ghana: The Real Diagnosis (2026)

Frequently Asked Questions

We run ads for our own brands in Ghana. SneakersINN. MachineWura.

We spend real money, manage the accounts daily, and live with the results. When something does not work, we cannot blame the client or the market — we have to find the actual problem and fix it. This gives us a different perspective on why Ghanaian business ads fail.

Not theory. 📞 Want us to diagnose your campaign?

The Diagnosis Most Agencies Will Not Give You

Most agencies in Ghana, when results are poor, will tell you one of three things: the market is competitive, you need to increase your budget, or give it more time. These answers have one thing in common — none of them require the agency to take responsibility or change anything. The real diagnosis is almost always more specific.

And almost always fixable. In our experience managing campaigns across fashion, electronics, and services in Ghana, underperforming campaigns trace back to one of six specific problems — usually in combination.

##

Problem 1 — Wrong Campaign Objective

How common

: The most frequent cause of poor results. We see this in the majority of ad accounts we audit. What it looks like: Plenty of clicks.

Low to zero purchases. Reasonable cost per click. Terrible cost per customer.

Why it happens: The business chose Traffic objective because it sounds right. Facebook then optimises for link clicks — it finds people who click on things. These people exist in abundance.

But clicking and buying are different behaviours and Facebook finds different people for each. The Ghanaian market nuance: Because mobile data costs are real in Ghana, many users have a habit of clicking links briefly and closing them — not deep reading or purchasing. A Traffic campaign finds these users disproportionately.

The click numbers look encouraging. The purchase numbers are dismal. The fix: Switch to Sales → Conversions → Purchase event if you have a Pixel tracking purchases.

Switch to Messages if you want WhatsApp enquiries. Switch to Leads if you want form submissions. Match the objective to the actual behaviour you want.

##

Problem 2 — The Pixel Is Broken

How common

: We see misconfigured Pixels in roughly 70% of ad accounts we audit in Ghana. What it looks like: Campaign running on Conversions objective, but results are poor. When you check Events Manager, purchase events are not firing — or they are firing multiple times per transaction.

Why it matters: The Meta Pixel is the feedback mechanism for the algorithm. When someone clicks your ad and purchases, the Pixel reports this back to Meta. Meta uses this data to find more people who match your buyer's profile.

Without accurate Pixel data, the algorithm is flying blind. Common Pixel problems in Ghanaian e-commerce: Pixel installed but Purchase event not configured Purchase event fires on the product page, not the order confirmation page Multiple Pixels installed from different setups, corrupting data Pixel stopped firing after a website update The fix: Open Events Manager and check your Purchase event. Confirm it fires once — on the order confirmation page, after payment is complete.

Use the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension and place a test order to verify.

##

Problem 3 — The Landing Page Is Leaking

How common

: Second most common cause of poor results in Ghana. What it looks like: Good CTR on the ad. Poor conversion rate after the click.

The ad is doing its job. The destination is failing. The Ghana-specific version: Many Ghanaian businesses send ad traffic to their Instagram bio, their website homepage, or a WhatsApp number with no auto-reply.

What we found with our own brands: When we moved SneakersINN from sending traffic to an Instagram page to a dedicated landing page built using robust conversion platforms, conversion rate from click to enquiry increased significantly. Same ads. Same audience.

Same budget. Different destination. Different results.

The fix: Build a dedicated landing page for each campaign. One product. One offer.

One CTA. Mobile-first. With MoMo payment at checkout.

No navigation. No other products.

##

Problem 4 — The Creative Is Not Stopping the Scroll

How common

: Present in most underperforming campaigns as a contributing factor. 8% on Feed placements). The ad is being shown but not clicked.

The Ghana-specific creative mistakes we see most: Mistake Why It Fails Product on white background Looks like a catalogue, stops no scroll Stock photos with Western context Feels irrelevant, not trusted Logo-led opening Nobody cares about your logo yet Video opening with "Welcome to our channel" Loses 80% of viewers in 3 seconds Corporate-looking designed graphics Looks like an ad, gets treated like one The rule we use: Show the creative to someone who does not know your business. If they cannot tell what you are selling and why they should care within three seconds — the creative is not working. The fix: Test a fundamentally different approach.

If you have been running static images, test video. If you have been using designed graphics, test raw lifestyle photography. If you have been leading with the product, test leading with the problem.

##

Problem 5 — The Offer Is the Problem, Not the Ad

How common

: The most uncomfortable diagnosis — and therefore the one most commonly avoided by agencies. What it looks like: Multiple creative approaches tested. Multiple audiences tested.

Consistent underperformance across everything. Akin Alabi's principle applied: A mediocre product with a great offer beats a great product with a weak offer every time. Most Ghanaian businesses are presenting a product.

Not an offer. Weak Offer Strong Offer "Quality women's bags. " "Premium bag delivered in Accra within 24 hours — or delivery is free.

" "Our electronics are the best. " "Buy today, get a free case + 12-month warranty. " "Free 20-minute call.

" The fix: Build the offer before rebuilding the ad. Answer: What exactly does the buyer get? What is the price?

What is the guarantee? Why buy today and not next week?

Problem 6 — No Follow-Up After the Click

How common

: Universal. We have not yet audited a Ghanaian business with a complete follow-up system in place. What it looks like: People enquire on WhatsApp and do not buy.

The business owner sees the enquiries and considers them non-buyers. They are actually unmade sales waiting for follow-up. The data: Research consistently shows most purchases happen between the fifth and twelfth contact.

Most Ghanaian businesses follow up once — if at all. What we built for our own brands: On our CRM and marketing platform, every person who enquires triggers an automatic WhatsApp sequence — an immediate acknowledgement, then messages over 7 days that build trust, handle objections, and ask for the sale multiple times. This closes a significant percentage of enquiries that would otherwise be permanently lost.

The fix: Build a 5–7 message WhatsApp follow-up sequence for every campaign. Automate it. Follow up every lead until they buy or explicitly ask to stop.

How to Diagnose Your Own Campaign

Use this sequence to find the problem: Step What to Check If Problem Found 1 Campaign objective correct? Change to Conversions or Messages 2 Pixel firing on purchase event? Fix Pixel configuration 3 Landing page mobile conversion rate?

8%? Test new creative 5 Offer has all 5 elements? Restructure the offer 6 Follow-up sequence in place?

Build WhatsApp automation Work through this in order. Fix from the top down.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Facebook ads were working before but stopped — what happened? The most common cause is creative fatigue. When your audience has seen the same ad 3–4 times (check your Frequency metric in Ads Manager), performance drops.

New creative fixes this. Also check whether any changes to your website broke the Pixel. 2×.

What is the biggest lever? In our experience, the biggest single lever is the landing page. 2× ROAS are generating clicks from buyers — the creative is working — but the page is failing to convert them.

Check your landing page conversion rate. If it is below 2%, the page is the problem. Should I pause my campaign if it is not working after one week?

No. The first 7 days are the learning phase. Pausing or making significant changes resets this phase.

Wait until day 7 before making any changes. After 7 days you have enough data to make informed decisions. How do I know if my Pixel is working correctly?

Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension (free). Visit your website and complete a test purchase. The extension shows which events fired and when.

If Purchase does not appear on your order confirmation page, the Pixel is misconfigured. Can I fix these problems myself or do I need an agency? The objective and basic Pixel configuration can be done yourself with the right guidance.

Landing page and creative optimisation require more skill and time. If your monthly ad spend is above GH₵3,000 and results are consistently poor, the cost of getting it wrong exceeds the cost of professional help. We audit and manage Meta campaigns for Ghanaian businesses.
